Humble Independent School District, covering a large part of the NE quadrant of the Houston metropolitan area, has grown from an early 1900’s one-teacher, one-room schoolhouse to membership in the 25 fastest-growing Texas school districts in the state. Over 2,000 teachers and 35 schools offer a 14.4 pupil-to-teacher ratio. It’s projected budget of over $222 million for 2007-08 rivals that of many small Texas towns.
Each year, the average NE Houston homeowner in Humble, Atascocita, and Kingwood contributes approximately $1,965 (based on a median price of $150,000) to the district budget — representing a significant portion of their annual housing bill. Whether you have school-aged children or not, it’s important to know how your tax dollars are being spent. Humble ISD has lots of programs and activities underway and construction projects due for completion in the next couple of years, and here’s a list of 10 for district residents.
Humble ISD Quick Links
1.Humble ISD has a community program called Your Schools Insider, a communication tool keeping parents informed about current events happening within the district and in their child’s school through email, telephone and text messaging for general and emergency alerts and announcements.
2. Summer Creek High School, Humble ISD’s sixth high school for grades 9-12, is under construction near the intersection of Beltway 8 and West Lake Houston Parkway. Scheduled to open in August 2009, the campus occupies approximately 67 acres on Weckford Drive. Funded by Bond 2005 for an estimated $71.7 million, the campus facilities will include student accommodations for 3200, an auditorium, indoor swimming pool, multiple athletic facilities, vocational education accommodations, fine arts and learning resources, and a food court.
3. Humble High School dates back to the early 1900’s – graduating its first 3 students in 1911. Its current campus – which graduated its first students in 1968 – is receiving a $37 million dollar renovation from Bond 2005. Improvements are scheduled for completion in October 2008. Priorities were to increase HHS student capacity without use of portable buildings, and to update the student’s learning environment. This is being accomplished through new educational “houses,” which serve as mini-schools within HHS, designed interact students and staff in a small, personalized environment. The investment of new technology and fresh facilities fosters a student sense of pride in their school.
4. By early 2009, Bond 2005 will breathe new life into 28-year old Kingwood High School. Among the many improvements will be new administration and Special Ed facilities, a science wing with upgraded equipment, a remodeled auditorium and theater facilities, wider hallways, and the “house” concept of learning facilities seen in the newest high school campuses around the country.
5.When construction completes in August 2008, the Jack M. Fields Elementary will make Humble ISD one of the few school districts in the country to boast its own Astronomical Observatory. A sliding roof, three powerful telescopes, and cameras are the heart of the facility planned for student and public use, which will be the only operating observatory in the Houston metropolitan area. Fundraising efforts for the facility are headed by The Humble ISD Education Foundation.
6. Through partnership with Lone Star College in Kingwood, Humble ISD offers high school junior and senior students an opportunity to earn college credit for their first two years of college while still in high school. Multiple benefits for those students participating in the Early College Program can include significant savings on tuition costs over public and private universities, scholarship opportunities, earning an associate degree, and the chance to experience a college environment while attending smaller classes.
7. Humble ISD is one of several Texas school districts to offer students course curriculum in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, which presents challenging study to participants from a global perspective. Students applying and accepted into this program will attend courses at Humble High School, and complete college-level work in the areas of English, Spanish, History, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and the arts. Beginning in 2007, an IB Middle Years Program (MYP) was implemented as a precursor to the high school IB curriculum, offering an advanced 3-year program for grades 6-8.
8. One of the non-traditional school choices offered by Humble ISD to its Humble and Kingwood High School students is the specialized Career & Technology Education Center campus, also known as CATE. Students can apply to take specialized courses preparing them for professional career opportunities in such fields as computer hardware & software technology, computer networking, health science, engineering, and web design. These courses are limited enrollment for qualified students, but offer community college credit for successfully completed courses.
9. Local businesses and individuals devote thousands of volunteered hours each year to the operation of Humble ISD. The Humble ISD VIP Program makes use of whatever time, talent or treasure is offered to positively impact the students and faculty of the many schools. Volunteers contribute in areas such as instruction programs and guest speaking, administrative services and supplies, fund raising projects, in-class participation and mentoring, and at-home services such as sewing, baking, or tutoring. Volunteer hours tracked by the district since 1997 exceed one million.
10.Humble ISD co-sponsors a local Fine Arts Festival each spring at the Lonestar College – Kingwood Fitness Center. The festival, usually held in April or May, is admission-free and open to the public. Designed as a day-long family event to recognize the performance and art accomplishments of Humble ISD students, the festival include hands-on activities for the kids, musical performances, silent auctions, book sales and author readings, and food concessions, against the backdrop of a district-wide art exhibit from students K-12.
